University of Southampton Delhi introduces a new one-year MSc in Data Science

National, 09th February 2026:  University of Southampton Delhi introduces a new one-year MSc in Data Science, designed to build advanced analytical, computational, and research expertise for solving real-world, human-centred challenges. Ranked among the world’s top 100 universities in the QS World University Rankings 2026, the University brings its global academic strength to a programme that responds to the growing demand for data scientists who can translate theory into responsible, scalable impact across industry, government, and academia.

The one-year MSc Data Science programme offers an application-led learning experience designed to equip students with the skills required for today’s data-driven economy. The curriculum spans machine learning, big data technologies, advanced analytics and social data analysis, with a strong focus on real-world problem-solving, independent research, and the ethical and responsible use of data.

The programme is open to graduates with an undergraduate degree in computer science or related disciplines such as software or computer engineering, mathematics, statistics or physics, with a minimum of 65% or an equivalent international qualification. Applicants should have prior exposure to at least one programming language, including Python, Java, MATLAB or C++, along with an advanced mathematics module, preferably in statistics or probability, and must meet English language requirements.

Commenting on the programme, Professor Eloise Phillips, Academic Provost, University of Southampton Delhi, said, “Across universities globally, there is a growing recognition that postgraduate education must evolve to keep pace with the complexity and scale of today’s data-driven world. One-year, intensive programmes reflect this shift—enabling students to acquire industry-relevant capabilities more efficiently, without diluting academic depth or rigour. By continuously updating curricula and integrating strong research foundations with real-world application, universities can prepare graduates to work confidently with large-scale datasets and contribute meaningfully to innovation, governance, and knowledge ecosystems, particularly in fast-growing markets like India.”

Dr Vaibhav Gandhi, Head of Computer Science at University of Southampton Delhi, said, “Data science has become a critical growth driver for India’s digital economy, influencing how businesses scale, how governments shape policy, and how institutions deliver impact at scale. Through this programme, students engage directly with real-world datasets and contemporary use cases, gaining hands-on experience in analytics, machine learning, and data-driven decision-making. The emphasis is on building strong technical capability and problem-solving skills that translate effectively across industry, public sector, and research environments.”

Eligible candidates can also apply for a range of Postgraduate Scholarships, including the prestigious Presidential Scholarship and the Postgraduate Future Talent Scholarship, supporting high-achieving students and future-ready data professionals.
