You’ll find out about the latest advances in areas like machine learning, cyber security and computer vision in this fast-moving industry and gain the knowledge to develop technologies that can make a difference to people’s lives.

The curriculum ensures strong understanding of basics in mathematics, theory of computing and systems including computer architecture and computer networking. Pathways in Cyber Security, Data and Algorithms, Systems and Networks, Artificial Intelligence, and Applications continue from foundational levels into the third year, and potentially towards a specialist master’s degree. The world-leading undergraduate programme offers in-depth, comprehensive knowledge and aligns with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) computing curriculum.

You’ll study in state-of-the-art teaching labs with the latest equipment and high-quality displays.

The content is equivalent to a BSc (Hons) Computer Science degree delivered to University of Southampton students in the UK.

What you will study

A strong programming pathway runs through three years with Python as a first language, C as a second, Java as a third followed by Haskell as a fourth language. Through a mix of theoretical, design and practical subjects, you’ll learn about:

  • basic computer science theory
  • the ethical and legal frameworks which computer scientists and software engineers work within
  • the practicalities of working with computers
  • key techniques and application areas

Year 1 overview

You’ll study the logical and mathematical theory underpinning computer science. You’ll also gain an understanding of the fundamentals of computer hardware.

As an introduction to software engineering, you’ll cover data structures and algorithms. You’ll also look at the principles of programming.

Year 2 overview

You’ll deepen your understanding of computer science by studying topics, such as artificial intelligence, communication protocols and the TCP/IP layered model.

Year 3 overview

A compulsory final year project is the capstone assessment for the three-year degree. Regular project work ensures teamwork, project planning, time management, presentation taking learning towards the successful completion of a brief.

An individual project is a chance to conduct in-depth research in an area of computer science that interests you, under the supervision of an academic with expertise in your chosen field. Cybersecurity, applications and artificial intelligence pathways span diverse modules and you will get to choose optional modules on areas like:

  • advanced databases
  • machine learning technologies
  • natural language processing
  • security of cyber physical systems
  • social computing techniques

Programme structure

This programme builds a comprehensive foundation in the discipline through inclusion of various modules as compulsory that are otherwise considered elective. Optional modules are geared to employability: they are attractive to students and well-received by industry. It includes research-led, contemporary compulsory modules on areas like formal specification and verification, the design of programming languages and interpreters and on artificial intelligence.

The Programme Description Document contains an overview of the programme, its aims, information on programme modules and shows how we assess student progress as they learn with us.

As a research-led University, we undertake a continuous review of our programmes to ensure quality enhancement and to manage our resources. As a result, this programme may be revised during a student’s period of registration; however, any revision will be balanced against the requirement that the student should receive the educational service expected. Please read our Disclaimer to see why, when, and how changes may be made to a student’s programme.

Semester abroad

You will have the possibility to spend a semester at University of Southampton UK in Year 2, learning in a vibrant academic and cultural context. The selection of students for a semester abroad will depend on academic performance and a decision by programme lead.

We welcome applications for a scholarship or bursary from any self-funding student who will be paying domestic Tuition Fees. Additional criteria, such as programme eligibility, are shown clearly on individual award pages. You must first make an application to study a specific programme before you make an application for a scholarship or bursary.

An Honours degree, shown with (Hons) in the programme title, mean that students will understand the fundamentals of their discipline and then build specialisation and perspective through optional modules. These fast-paced, intense programmes deliver essential learning in the first academic year and offer optional course modules, or electives, in the second year. Honours degrees are offered at University of Southampton campuses across the world, reflecting teaching and learning to a higher academic standard, meaning that an Honours degree would hold more value post graduation for future study and career development.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has mandated University of Southampton Delhi to make sure that programmes delivered in India are the same as those delivered at University of Southampton in the UK. Three years is the standard length of an undergraduate Honours degree in England where University of Southampton sets academic standards. This 3 year length reflects a trend towards accelerated learning where students see a return on their tuition fees as quickly as possible, whilst still maintaining high academic standards and the quality of the degree awarded. University of Southampton 3 year undergraduate degrees, and 1 year postgraduate degrees, are accepted widely internationally.

Degrees with a BA and BSc award do not represent a stream, but a broad categorisation that reflects student choice and leaning. Our BSc (Hons) and BEng (Hons) undergraduate degrees are oriented towards specialist, technical roles in industry with an analytical approach, not science subjects.

Our programmes are designed to make sure that students quickly understand the fundamentals of their discipline, and then build specialisation and perspective through electives, or optional, modules. These optional modules are typically offered in academic years 2 and 3, adding depth and breadth to core learning from previous years. As these options are often built around real-world trends, the specific choice of module available to students from year to year may vary.
