University of Southampton Delhi warmly congratulates Dame Wendy Hall, Regius Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton, on her appointment as British Science Association President for 2026–27.

Dame Wendy’s appointment holds particular significance for the University community following her recent engagement with audiences across India. During her recent visit to India, she led workshop on International Perspectives on Responsible AI at University of Southampton Delhi campus, participated in high-profile workshops and contributed to discussions at the India AI Impact Summit, engaging students, academics, policymakers and industry leaders on the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies. 

A globally recognised Web Science pioneer and one of the most influential voices in AI and technology policy, Dame Wendy has played a transformative role in shaping the development of the internet and advancing international conversations around emerging technologies. Her appointment is a fitting recognition of a distinguished career dedicated to research excellence, public engagement and technological innovation. 

The announcement holds particular significance for the University community following Dame Wendy’s recent visit to India, where she engaged with students, academics, policymakers and industry leaders through a series of high-profile events and discussions. As Regius Professor and Director of the Web Science Institute, she has been instrumental in shaping global conversations around responsible AI, data governance and the societal impact of technology. 

During her visit, Dame Wendy led sessions at University of Southampton Delhi campus, participated in expert workshops and contributed to discussions at the India AI Impact Summit. These engagements reflected the University’s commitment to connecting education, research and policy to create meaningful real-world impact. 

A highlight of her visit was a headline lecture exploring the challenges and opportunities of artificial intelligence in a rapidly changing world. The session brought together students from leading schools across Delhi and created a dynamic platform for discussion on technology, innovation and the future of AI. Through an engaging conversation with Samiya Khan, Lecturer in Computer Science at University of Southampton Delhi, Regius Professor Dame Wendy Hall reflected on the evolution of technology from the early days of the internet to today’s generative AI systems, while encouraging students to think critically about ethics, accountability and the future of innovation. 

Recognised internationally for her contributions to Artificial Intelligence leadership, Dame Wendy also emphasised the importance of Responsible AI development, highlighting the need for technology to be shaped by strong governance, ethical principles and diverse perspectives. Her discussions reinforced the growing importance of AI innovation and research that delivers positive outcomes for society while addressing emerging challenges. 

At the India AI Impact Summit, Professor Dame Wendy Hall spoke about the lessons that can be learned from the evolution of the web and the importance of ensuring that advances in artificial intelligence are accompanied by responsible oversight and public understanding. She also championed greater diversity and inclusion within the technology sector, advocating for broader representation in the development of future AI systems. 

Her appointment comes at an exciting time for the University, as preparations begin for the British Science Association 2026 Festival. As President, Dame Wendy will help lead one of the United Kingdom’s most respected scientific organisations, championing public engagement with science and promoting informed discussions around the technologies shaping our future.
